Control-Mastery Therapy (CMT)
CMT is an evidence-based model of treatment recognized as a highly effective tool in the resolution of anxiety and depression. I’m proud to have trained under top CMT therapists at the San Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group (SFPRG), the worldwide center for CMT research and teaching. I’ve also acted as a supervisor for internship trainees at the SFPRG clinic.
What is CMT Treatment for Anxiety and Depression?
Control-Mastery refers to the theory's premise that people have control over the content of their minds and the belief that they seek treatment to master their own lives. That means we are not just passive actors at the mercy of our symptoms, but rather we have the power to grow and heal. CMT is highly effective in helping people update their mental maps of the world and to feel safe to emerge from their protective shells and self-sabotaging behaviors.
Getting Unstuck
If you’re dealing with anxiety CMT can help you:
Identify and change unconscious beliefs that fuel anxiety
Help you regain control over your environment and emotional reactions
Provide a safe therapeutic space to process past trauma and anxiety triggers
Rework past experiences and develop healthy coping strategies
Foster a sense of mastery and competence in dealing with anxiety-provoking challenges
CMT Therapy For Depression Means Empowerment
CMT helps people with depression by addressing the underlying belief that they are powerless and incapable of regaining control over their lives. Through therapy, individuals can identify self-defeating patterns, challenge maladaptive beliefs, and develop a healthier sense of mastery over their emotions and circumstances. By restoring a sense of control, CMT helps individuals reduce feelings of helplessness, which are a core feature of low mood.
